RTR’s overarching mission is to increase the number of potential donors on the Be The Match Registry. RTR also creates awarness on the need to increase the number of potential marrow, stem cell and cord blood donors, using endurance sports as our platform. RTR provides inspiration, hope and healing by matching patients with potential donors.
Who We Are
Racing To Register (“RTR”) was started as a website in 2009 in order to inspire people to join the Be TheMatch Registry® (formerly National Bone Marrow DonorRegistry) by Tom Kramer, as his wife Pam has a form of Leukemia and needs a donor. Using endurance sports as a platform, Tom undertook the mission of completing1 marathon, 2 half Ironman and one full Ironman race in one year to inspire others to join the Registry. Today, RTR is a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation which obtained tax-exempt status under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. To date, RTR has registered over 1,300 people and has facilitated two potential patient matches for patients.
What We Do
Racing to Register hosts several marrow donor registration drives each year throughout the region. The organization is also constantly working to raise funds which are used for various purposes. Racing To Register also supports the Racing To Register Endurance Team, which includes triathletes, swimmers, cyclists and runners, but is open to all levels and anyone of any age.
Programs
RTR CARES
RTR operates the RTR Cares program, which was established in 2011 in order to grant “wishes” to parents, children, and families who are staying at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. The goal of RTR Cares is to attempt to ease this burden, and to provide a temporary escape to a place of choice, whether it’s to a concert, sporting event, or dinner at a nice restaurant.
TEAM RTR
TEAM RTR is a program whereby any individual can register for a half marathon, marathon or triathlon and use that event to fund-raise for Racing to Register. Participants are able to receive a custom made training program developed by Mid Atlantic Multi Sport (www.midatlanticmultisport.com), and have access to race education clinics, a personal fund-raising web site, support from RTR and teammates, and exclusive entry to premier events. More information can be found on www.firstgiving.com/racingtoregister.
